Speaking on the Dwarkesh Podcast, the billionaire entrepreneur outlined his vision of orbital AI data centers, suggesting that within the next 36 months, space could become the cheapest and most efficient location for deploying AI infrastructure.
Why Space Could Beat Earth for AI
Musk explained that one of the biggest challenges in scaling AI systems on Earth is energy. Data centers require massive amounts of power, and maintaining that supply sustainably is becoming increasingly difficult. In contrast, space offers a unique advantage—uninterrupted solar energy.
According to Musk, solar panels in space can generate up to five times more energy compared to those on Earth. This is because space eliminates several energy barriers such as atmospheric interference, cloud cover, seasonal changes, and the day-night cycle.
He pointed out that Earth’s atmosphere alone can reduce solar energy efficiency by around 30%. In space, however, solar panels can operate at maximum capacity continuously, without the need for energy storage solutions like batteries. This significantly reduces operational costs and complexity.
No Night, No Weather, No Limits
One of Musk’s key arguments is that space eliminates many of the environmental limitations faced on Earth. There are no clouds, no weather disruptions, and no nighttime interruptions in sunlight exposure.
This constant availability of solar energy means AI data centers in orbit could operate more efficiently and consistently than their Earth-based counterparts.
Musk emphasized that removing the need for large-scale battery systems is a major cost advantage. On Earth, data centers rely heavily on backup power and storage systems to ensure uninterrupted operations, especially during the night or adverse weather conditions. In space, this requirement disappears almost entirely.

Musk did not hold back in making a bold timeline prediction. He stated that space could become “by far the cheapest place to put AI” within 36 months—or possibly even sooner, estimating around 30 months.
While such a timeline may seem ambitious, it reflects Musk’s confidence in rapid technological advancements and the growing interest in space-based infrastructure.
The Role of Hardware and GPUs
During the discussion, Musk also addressed concerns about the reliability of GPUs, which are critical for AI training and operations. He argued that hardware failures are often overestimated as a risk.
Once GPUs—whether developed by companies like NVIDIA, Tesla, or others producing specialized chips such as TPUs and Trainium—pass their initial debugging phase, they tend to perform reliably over time.
