Sanju Samson
Ever since Sanju Samson joined Chennai Super Kings ahead of the IPL 2026 season, fans have been eager to know whether he would eventually take over the captaincy from Ruturaj Gaikwad. With CSK struggling for consistency this season and Samson delivering match-winning performances, discussions around a leadership change have only intensified.
However, Samson has now made it clear that he never entered the franchise with expectations of becoming captain. Ahead of CSK’s important clash against Lucknow Super Giants at Chepauk, the wicketkeeper-batter opened up about his mindset after leaving the Rajasthan Royals and joining Chennai.
Speaking on the Super Kings podcast with former cricketer Abhinav Mukund, Samson explained that moving to a new team was more about proving himself rather than making demands.
According to Samson, he had already spent years building his place with another franchise and understood that joining a new environment required humility and patience. He compared the transition to entering a new home, saying that a person cannot walk into a new place carrying expectations or demands.
The star batter said he wanted to focus on earning trust through performances and commitment. He added that CSK showed faith in him by bringing him into the squad, and he is prepared to give everything back to the franchise.
Samson’s performances this season have certainly justified that trust. The right-handed batter has been in sensational form during IPL 2026, scoring 402 runs in just 10 matches at an impressive average of over 57. His campaign so far includes two centuries and one half-century. Interestingly, CSK have managed to win every match in which Samson has played a major innings, making him one of the franchise’s most impactful signings this season.
Despite growing calls from fans for a captaincy change, Samson strongly backed current skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad. He described Gaikwad as one of the calmest and most confident cricketers in Indian cricket today.
Samson praised the CSK captain for his personality and leadership style, saying that Gaikwad does not behave like a typical superstar despite leading one of the biggest franchises in the IPL. He explained that while Gaikwad may appear quiet on the outside, he possesses immense self-belief and confidence as a player and leader.
The 31-year-old also revealed that it was Gaikwad who personally convinced him to join CSK after his long stint with the Rajasthan Royals. Samson admitted that this gesture left a strong impression on him because it reflected Gaikwad’s confidence and willingness to build a strong team without insecurity.
He further stated that actions matter more than words in cricket and appreciated the way Gaikwad handled the transition. According to Samson, inviting an experienced former captain into the squad itself showed how secure and mature Gaikwad is as a leader.
CSK currently sit sixth on the IPL 2026 points table and remain in the race for a playoff spot. A victory against Lucknow Super Giants could move them into the top five and strengthen their chances of qualifying for the knockout stage.
While fans may continue debating who should lead Chennai in the future, Samson’s comments have made one thing clear — his current focus is entirely on contributing as a player and helping CSK succeed rather than chasing the captaincy role.
