Dharmendra
The making of Awaargi became the subject of intense Bollywood gossip in the early 1990s after rumours surfaced about a heated disagreement involving Govinda and veteran star Dharmendra. Reports at the time even claimed that Dharmendra had slapped Govinda during an argument connected to the film’s casting changes. Although the rumours spread rapidly across the industry, Dharmendra later denied that any such incident had taken place.
At the time, Govinda was one of Bollywood’s fastest-rising stars, known for his comic timing, energetic performances, and strong fan following. Initially, “Awaargi” was reportedly planned around Govinda and Meenakshi Sheshadri in lead roles. However, things changed when Anil Kapoor was brought into the project, which reportedly altered the film’s overall dynamics.
According to reports from that period, Govinda was not entirely comfortable sharing the screen with Anil Kapoor. Industry insiders claimed that Govinda decided to personally meet Dharmendra to explain his concerns regarding the situation. Since Dharmendra was closely connected with the project and respected by everyone in the industry, Govinda reportedly hoped the veteran actor would understand his point of view.
The meeting between the two actors soon became the centre of media speculation. Rumours began circulating that the conversation turned heated and that Dharmendra had slapped Govinda during the disagreement. Some reports even claimed the incident happened in front of people on the film’s set.
However, Dharmendra strongly rejected these claims in later interviews and clarified that no physical altercation ever took place. Despite the denial, the story continued to survive as one of Bollywood’s most talked-about behind-the-scenes rumours from the 90s.
Over the years, the alleged clash became part of film industry folklore, often revisited whenever discussions around Bollywood rivalries and casting conflicts emerged. Even though there has never been confirmed evidence supporting the slap rumours, the story still sparks curiosity among fans of classic Hindi cinema.
Directed by Mahesh Bhatt, “Awaargi” told an emotional story filled with crime, sacrifice, and romance. The film revolved around Azad, played by Anil Kapoor, a gangster who rescues Seema, portrayed by Meenakshi Sheshadri, from a brothel despite opposition from dangerous criminals. Wanting to help her achieve a better life, Azad dreams of turning Seema into a successful singer.
Govinda played Dhiren, a supportive and caring character who becomes closely involved in Seema’s journey. As the story progresses, both men develop feelings for her, creating an emotional love triangle filled with loyalty, heartbreak, and sacrifice.
Apart from the lead cast, the film also featured talented actors such as Anupam Kher, Paresh Rawal, and Satish Kaushik, who added depth and intensity to the narrative.
Despite the off-screen controversy, “Awaargi” remains remembered for its music composed by Anu Malik. One of the film’s most iconic songs, Chamakte Chand Ko, sung by Ghulam Ali with lyrics by Asad Bhopali, continues to be loved by music fans even decades after its release.
While the truth behind the Dharmendra-Govinda rumours may never be fully known, the story remains one of the most intriguing pieces of Bollywood history from the golden era of 90s cinema.
