Vijay
Actor-turned-politician C Joseph Vijay grabbed national attention not just for becoming the new Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, but also for making a bold fashion statement during his swearing-in ceremony. Held at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, the event marked a major political milestone for Vijay and his party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK).
As thousands of supporters cheered loudly inside the packed stadium, Vijay walked onto the stage wearing a sharp black suit paired with a crisp white shirt. The look immediately became one of the most talked-about moments of the ceremony because it broke away from Tamil Nadu’s long-standing political dress tradition.
For decades, most political leaders in Tamil Nadu have preferred the classic white shirt and dhoti or veshti during public appearances and oath-taking ceremonies. The attire has often been associated with simplicity, regional identity, and Dravidian politics. Vijay’s decision to appear in a modern black suit therefore stood out as a carefully planned political and symbolic move.
A Modern Power-Dressing Statement
According to reports, Vijay had the suit specially designed well before the official announcement of election results. Sources claimed that preparations began once TVK started emerging as the single-largest party during counting trends. His appearance reflected confidence, authority, and a fresh political image aimed at appealing to younger voters and urban audiences.
The black colour itself carries strong political symbolism in Tamil Nadu. It has historically been linked with the Dravidian movement led by Periyar E. V. Ramasamy. Followers of Periyar have traditionally used black shirts and black flags as symbols of self-respect, social justice, and resistance against traditional power structures.
Political observers believe Vijay’s outfit may have been designed to combine modern leadership with Dravidian symbolism. While the formal suit projected a contemporary image, the use of black subtly connected him to Tamil Nadu’s powerful regional political history.
Vijay Declares Himself the Sole Power Centre
After taking oath in his trademark cinematic style, Vijay delivered his first speech as Chief Minister and made it clear that he intended to lead the government without outside influence.
“There will be no power centre other than me. I will be the only centre of power,” Vijay declared during his address. His statement was widely seen as a message to alliance partners and political rivals that the new government would function under his direct leadership.
The speech also carried a warning for those attempting to destabilize his administration. Vijay said he would neither engage in wrongdoing nor allow others around him to do so. He urged opponents to abandon any plans that could harm the stability of the government.
Introducing himself as “Thambi,” meaning younger brother in Tamil, Vijay attempted to connect emotionally with the public while also presenting himself as a strong and decisive leader.
Support From Alliance Partners
During the speech, Vijay thanked several alliance leaders and political parties that supported TVK in reaching the majority mark required to form the government. He specifically acknowledged senior Congress leaders including Mallikarjun Kharge and Rahul Gandhi, whom he referred to as his “brother.”
He also expressed gratitude toward leaders from CPI(M), VCK, CPI, and other regional allies for backing the coalition government.
New Ministers Sworn In
Alongside Vijay, nine senior TVK leaders also took oath as cabinet ministers during the ceremony. Reports suggest that leaders from supporting alliance parties, including Congress and other regional groups, may join the cabinet later after discussions regarding ministerial portfolios are completed.
The ceremony marked the beginning of a new political chapter in Tamil Nadu, with Vijay attempting to blend cinema-style charisma, symbolic politics, and modern leadership into his governance image. His black suit may have lasted only a few hours on stage, but it has already become one of the defining visuals of his political debut as Chief Minister.
