Shekhar Suman
After nearly 16 years, actor and television host Shekhar Suman has finally received major relief in a long-standing legal case. The Bombay High Court has quashed the FIR filed against him and comedian Bharti Singh, bringing an end to a controversy that dates back to 2010.
The case originated from an episode of the popular television show Comedy Circus Ka Jadoo, where a line used during a comic act—“Ya Allah! Rasgulla! Dahi Bhalla!”—sparked outrage among some groups. A complaint was filed alleging that the words were offensive and hurt religious sentiments. Based on this complaint, an FIR was registered not only against Suman and Singh but also against the television channel and a scriptwriter associated with the show.
However, in its recent verdict delivered on May 1, the High Court made it clear that merely mentioning food items in a comedic context does not amount to insulting any religion. The court emphasized that for such an allegation to hold, there must be clear intent to use words as a tool to offend religious beliefs. In the absence of such intent or supporting material, the case could not stand.
The complaint had been filed by a representative of the Raza Academy, who claimed that the joke indirectly referenced a Quranic verse and was therefore objectionable. The line was reportedly spoken by Bharti Singh and repeated during the episode, which led to the controversy.
Reacting to the court’s decision, Shekhar Suman expressed both surprise and relief. He stated that he was not even fully aware of the case and had long forgotten about it. According to him, the joke was made innocently by Bharti Singh without any religious connotation, and he himself was not actively involved in that particular act.
Speaking to the media, Suman said, “I didn’t even know about it. It was Bharti who had said something innocuously, with no religious connotation. I wasn’t even part of it, but was unnecessarily dragged into the matter, possibly for publicity.”
He further expressed gratitude to the judiciary, saying, “I’m extremely thankful to the honourable judge who dismissed the case. It came as a surprise because I had completely forgotten about it. I was never issued a notice or asked to present my side. It’s unfortunate how some people waste the court’s valuable time and harass innocent citizens. Justice prevails.”
The verdict highlights the importance of intent when assessing cases related to alleged religious insult, especially in the context of entertainment and comedy. It also underscores how prolonged legal battles can affect individuals, even in cases where evidence or intent is lacking.
With this ruling, both Shekhar Suman and Bharti Singh have finally been cleared of all charges, closing a chapter that lingered for over a decade and a half.
