Sunil Dutt
The love story of Raj Kapoor and Nargis remains one of Bollywood’s most emotional and talked-about relationships. While their on-screen chemistry created cinematic magic, their real-life romance reportedly ended in heartbreak that deeply affected Raj Kapoor for years.
According to author Madhu Jain in her book The Kapoors: The First Family of Indian Cinema, Raj Kapoor was shattered when Nargis married Sunil Dutt in 1958. The book claims Kapoor considered her marriage “a great betrayal,” despite the two sharing a long and complicated relationship for years.
As per the book, Raj Kapoor struggled to accept Nargis’ decision to move on. He once reportedly told a journalist, “The world says I let Nargis down. It was she who betrayed me.”
The emotional impact on the legendary filmmaker was said to be intense. The book mentions that Kapoor broke down in front of friends and colleagues after learning about Nargis’ marriage. It also claims he would burn himself with cigarette butts to make sure he was not dreaming and kept wondering how she could leave him.
Years later, stories about his heartbreak continued to surface through people close to the Kapoor family. Raj Kapoor’s wife, Krishna Raj Kapoor, reportedly revealed that he often returned home drunk and spent nights crying in the bathtub. She was quoted as saying that she knew he was not crying for her, but for Nargis.
The book also states that Nargis had waited for years hoping Raj Kapoor would eventually marry her. However, since he was already married, the relationship remained uncertain. Nargis reportedly wanted a stable family life and longed to become a wife and mother.
The turning point came during the shooting of Mother India, where Sunil Dutt famously saved Nargis from a fire on set. Their bond soon turned into love, and the couple married before the film’s release in 1958.
Despite the painful past, relations between the Kapoor family and Nargis later improved. Krishna Raj Kapoor reportedly even invited Nargis to Rishi Kapoor’s wedding and ensured she felt welcomed.
Even decades later, the Raj Kapoor-Nargis love story continues to be remembered as one of Bollywood’s most tragic and unforgettable romances.
