Anand Mahindra has drawn attention to one of the most dramatic moments from the recent Tamil Nadu Assembly elections after a constituency was decided by a margin of just one vote. Calling it a powerful lesson in democracy, Mahindra said the result proves how a single vote can change history.
Sharing a screenshot of the election result from the Tiruppattur constituency on social media, the Mahindra Group chairman said the image should be shown in schools across the country so children understand the true value of voting.
“The election results were dramatic by any measure. But for me, this image will remain the most unforgettable outcome of the elections,” Mahindra wrote.
He further added, “More than 166,000 votes were cast between the two leading candidates in this constituency in Tamil Nadu. And history was changed by just one vote.”
Mahindra also stressed the importance of civic participation and the power held by every individual in a democracy. “This image should be shown in every school in the country and perhaps around the world. So that every child understands that when they grow up, the greatest power they may possess is the Power of One. The power of their one vote,” he said.

The closely watched Tiruppattur Assembly constituency became one of the biggest talking points of the election after veteran Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam leader K R Periyakaruppan lost the election by a single vote.
Periyakaruppan, who previously served as a minister in the government led by M K Stalin, was seeking re-election from the constituency. However, he was defeated by Seenivasa Sethupathy R Sethupathy, the candidate from Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam, popularly known as TVK.
According to the final election results, Sethupathy secured 83,375 votes, while Periyakaruppan received 83,374 votes, creating one of the narrowest victory margins seen in recent Indian political history.
The result was particularly surprising because Periyakaruppan had won the same constituency comfortably during the 2021 Assembly elections. At that time, he had defeated his nearest rival by more than 37,000 votes. The dramatic shift in voter preference within just five years has shocked many political observers in Tamil Nadu.
The Tiruppattur constituency witnessed a strong voter turnout of over 80% during the 2026 elections. A total of 15 candidates contested from the seat, including representatives from major and regional parties as well as independent candidates.
Political analysts believe the result also reflects the growing popularity of TVK and actor-turned-politician Vijay in Tamil Nadu politics. TVK emerged as a major political force in its debut Assembly election by winning 108 out of 234 seats. Although the party fell short of the majority mark, it successfully challenged the decades-long dominance of the DMK and AIADMK in the state.
The one-vote victory has since gone viral on social media, with many users echoing Anand Mahindra’s message about the importance of every vote in a democracy. Several people pointed out that elections are not just decided by large crowds or political rallies but often by individual citizens making the effort to participate in the voting process.
The incident has now become a symbol of how every single vote matters and how even one person’s decision can shape the political future of a constituency, a state, or even a country.
