The United States has indicated that it plans to approach its economic relationship with India differently from how it handled its trade ties with China two decades ago. Christopher Landau, the U.S. Deputy Secretary of State, said Washington intends to ensure that its partnership with India remains balanced and beneficial to American interests.
Landau made the remarks while speaking at the Raisina Dialogue, India’s leading conference focused on geopolitics and geoeconomics. During his address, he discussed the growing economic engagement between the two nations and the possibility of a new trade agreement.
According to Landau, the United States is optimistic about the nearly finalized trade deal between the two countries. He said the agreement could open up major economic opportunities and deepen commercial ties.
“We are excited about the trade deal that is almost at the finish line,” Landau said, adding that it could unlock enormous economic potential between the two partners.
However, he also emphasized that Washington has learned lessons from its past engagement with China. He said the United States would avoid creating a situation where a trading partner eventually becomes a major economic rival.
Landau explained that in the past, the U.S. helped expand markets that eventually strengthened China’s economic power. He suggested that Washington will take a more cautious approach with India to ensure that American interests remain protected.
“We have to be accountable to our own people, just as the government of India has to be accountable to its citizens,” he said.
Mixed reactions from experts
Landau’s remarks triggered strong reactions among Indian strategic experts and observers. Former Indian foreign secretary Kanwal Sibal questioned the implications of the statement, asking whether the United States intended to influence or limit India’s economic rise.
Sibal argued that India should take such signals seriously while shaping its economic policies. He suggested that New Delhi must reduce dependence on any single country and continue strengthening domestic capabilities under the government’s self-reliance strategy, often referred to as “Atmanirbhar Bharat.”
He also recommended diversifying economic partnerships with other global markets to avoid excessive reliance on Washington.

Landau’s comments also sparked debate on social media platform X, where some users criticized the blunt nature of the message delivered on Indian soil.
Several commentators suggested that India should remain cautious while negotiating trade agreements with the United States, especially under the leadership of Donald Trump.
Trade talks and energy cooperation
Despite the controversy, the United States continues to signal its willingness to work closely with India on economic and energy issues. Landau said Washington is ready to cooperate with New Delhi to address both short-term and long-term energy challenges.
India and the United States are currently negotiating a broader trade agreement. As part of the ongoing discussions, the U.S. recently reduced tariffs on certain Indian goods from around 50 percent to approximately 18 percent.
At the same time, India is also expanding its trade partnerships with other global economies. New Delhi has been strengthening economic ties with the European Union and exploring new agreements to diversify its trade network.
As the negotiations continue, analysts believe the evolving economic relationship between India and the United States will play a crucial role in shaping the global trade landscape in the coming years.
