Rahul Gandhi

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi urging the central government to confer the country’s highest civilian honour, the Bharat Ratna, posthumously on Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) founder Kanshi Ram.

In his letter, the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha emphasized Kanshi Ram’s immense contribution to social justice and his role in shaping a powerful political movement for marginalized communities. Gandhi described the BSP founder as a “great warrior of social justice” and a guiding figure for the Bahujan movement.

Rahul Gandhi’s Appeal to the Government

Sharing his views on social media platform X, Rahul Gandhi said that honouring Kanshi Ram with the Bharat Ratna would be a meaningful recognition of his lifelong struggle for equality and empowerment.

According to Gandhi, Kanshi Ram dedicated his life to raising the voice of historically marginalized groups in India and worked tirelessly to bring them into the mainstream political system. He argued that granting the Bharat Ratna to Kanshi Ram would not only honour the leader’s legacy but also acknowledge the aspirations of millions who continue to draw inspiration from his work.

Gandhi said the award would pay tribute to the broader Bahujan movement, which aimed to secure political representation, dignity, and rights for communities that had long faced social discrimination.

Demand Raised by Dalit Leaders and Intellectuals

In his letter to the Prime Minister, Rahul Gandhi pointed out that the demand to honour Kanshi Ram with the Bharat Ratna has been consistently raised by Dalit intellectuals, social activists, and political leaders over the years.

He mentioned that he had recently attended a public programme in Lucknow where participants strongly reiterated the demand. According to him, the sentiment expressed at the event reflected a widespread belief among supporters and followers that Kanshi Ram deserves national recognition for his contributions.

Gandhi said conferring the award would be a historic step in acknowledging Kanshi Ram’s influence on Indian politics and social justice movements.

Rahul Gandhi Pays Tribute on Birth Anniversary

Earlier, Rahul Gandhi also paid tribute to Kanshi Ram on his birth anniversary through a post on social media. He described the BSP founder as a “Bahujan hero” and remembered his relentless fight for the rights of the poor, Dalits, and other disadvantaged communities.

Gandhi said Kanshi Ram’s dedication and struggle continue to inspire people who believe in equality and justice. He also highlighted that Kanshi Ram’s work created a new political consciousness among marginalized groups, encouraging them to demand representation and participation in governance.

Kanshi Ram’s Political Legacy

Kanshi Ram founded the Bahujan Samaj Party in 1984 with the goal of uniting marginalized communities, including Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, Other Backward Classes, and religious minorities. His vision was to build a strong political platform that would give these communities a greater voice in India’s democratic system.

Inspired by the ideas of B. R. Ambedkar, Kanshi Ram worked to promote social equality and political empowerment for Dalits and other disadvantaged groups. Over time, his movement transformed into a major political force, especially in the state of Uttar Pradesh.

Kanshi Ram’s leadership also paved the way for the rise of Mayawati, who later became one of the most prominent Dalit leaders in Indian politics and served multiple terms as the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh.

Mayawati Pays Tribute but Questions Congress

On the occasion of Kanshi Ram’s birth anniversary, BSP chief Mayawati also paid tribute to her mentor and the party’s founder. In a social media message, she offered her respects and described him as the architect of the Bahujan Samaj Party.

Mayawati said that followers of Kanshi Ram across Uttar Pradesh and the rest of the country continue to remember his contributions with deep respect.

However, she also questioned the Congress party’s recent demand to award Kanshi Ram the Bharat Ratna. In a post on X, Mayawati pointed out that when the Congress was in power, it did not confer the Bharat Ratna on Dr. B. R. Ambedkar, who is widely regarded as the principal architect of the Indian Constitution.

According to her, this raises questions about the party’s intentions now that it is advocating for Kanshi Ram to receive the honour.

Debate Over National Recognition

The discussion surrounding Kanshi Ram’s recognition reflects broader political debates about how India honours leaders who have shaped social justice movements.

Supporters argue that Kanshi Ram’s work transformed the political landscape by mobilizing marginalized communities and creating a platform for their representation. Critics, meanwhile, view the issue through a political lens, especially in the context of party rivalries.

Despite the differing opinions, Kanshi Ram’s role in empowering Dalit and Bahujan communities remains widely acknowledged. Whether or not the government decides to confer the Bharat Ratna, his influence on Indian politics and social justice movements continues to shape the country’s democratic conversation.
