Anthropic
AI startup Anthropic has expanded the capabilities of its assistant Claude AI by introducing its powerful “computer use” feature to Windows users. Initially available only on macOS, this update now allows a wider audience to experience AI-driven automation directly on their desktops.
The announcement was shared via the company’s official handle on X, confirming that the feature is now live for Windows through Claude Cowork and Claude Code Desktop.
What is Claude ‘Computer Use’?
The “computer use” feature significantly upgrades Claude’s abilities, enabling it to perform tasks on a computer almost like a human user. Instead of just generating text or code, the AI can now:
- Open and manage applications
- Navigate software interfaces
- Write, test, and debug code
- Identify and fix issues automatically
In simple terms, users can assign a task—like building an app—and Claude can handle everything from development to testing within a single prompt. This marks a major step toward autonomous AI workflows.
How It Works on Windows
The feature is currently available as a research preview for users subscribed to Claude Pro and Claude Max plans. Getting started is straightforward:
- Download and install Claude Cowork or Claude Code Desktop
- No complex setup or terminal commands are required
- Claude uses your system’s existing resources to perform tasks
Another key addition is its integration with the Dispatch feature, which allows users to assign tasks remotely using a smartphone. This makes it possible to manage workflows even when you’re away from your computer.
Security and User Control
Despite its powerful capabilities, Anthropic has implemented strict safeguards:
- Users must grant app permissions for each session
- Claude can only access applications explicitly approved
- Additional warnings appear for apps with deep system access
- Only one session can control the system at a time
If needed, users can immediately stop any ongoing task using the Escape (Esc) key or terminal commands, ensuring full control remains in human hands.
Concerns Over Usage Limits Addressed
Recently, some users reported that their usage limits were being consumed faster than expected. Addressing these concerns, Lydia Hallie clarified that no extra charges were applied.
According to her, the issue stemmed from tighter limits during peak hours and increased context sizes in sessions. While a few bugs were identified and fixed, there was no overbilling involved.
She also advised users to switch to the Sonnet 4.6 model for better efficiency, noting that more advanced models like Opus can consume tokens nearly twice as fast.
Why This Matters
With this rollout, Anthropic is pushing the boundaries of what AI assistants can do. By enabling direct interaction with operating systems like Windows, Claude moves beyond being just a chatbot—it becomes a hands-on digital assistant capable of executing real-world tasks.
As AI continues to evolve, features like “computer use” hint at a future where much of the routine digital work could be handled autonomously, saving time and boosting productivity.
