The year 2025 has turned into a breakthrough phase for teenage cricket sensation Vaibhav Suryavanshi. The prodigious batter grabbed national attention after smashing a record-breaking century in the IPL and has since continued his golden run at the Under-19 level with one explosive knock after another.
Vaibhav announced his arrival on the global youth stage with a sensational 171-run innings in his very first Under-19 Asia Cup match, leaving fans and experts in awe. However, despite his red-hot form and remarkable achievements, the young star remains unavailable for selection to the Indian senior team at present.
Age Rule Stands in the Way
The reason behind Vaibhav’s ineligibility has nothing to do with performance or selection policy, but an ICC regulation on age eligibility. As per a rule introduced in 2020, a cricketer must be at least 15 years old to feature in international cricket. Vaibhav is currently 14 and will turn 15 on March 27, 2026, meaning he must wait a little over three months before becoming eligible for India’s national side.
A Season of Record-Breaking Achievements
Vaibhav’s rapid rise has been filled with milestones. In the IPL, he stunned everyone by hammering a 35-ball hundred against Gujarat Titans, becoming the fastest Indian to score a century in the league’s history. He followed it up with centuries in both ODI and Test formats for the Indian Under-19 team, underlining his adaptability across formats.
His brilliance wasn’t limited to youth cricket alone. Vaibhav also notched up a century in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, further strengthening his reputation as one of India’s most destructive young batters.
Impressive Career Numbers So Far
In the IPL, Vaibhav was picked up by Rajasthan Royals for ₹1.1 crore and went on to score 252 runs in seven matches at a stunning strike rate of 206.55, including 24 sixes.
In first-class cricket, he has accumulated 207 runs in eight matches, with a highest score of 93.
His List A record includes 132 runs in six matches, while in T20 cricket he has scored 701 runs in 18 matches, featuring three centuries.
Despite the temporary roadblock, Vaibhav Suryavanshi’s extraordinary talent and fearless batting have already made him one of the most talked-about names in Indian cricket. With age being the only hurdle, fans and experts alike are eagerly waiting for the day he officially becomes eligible to don the India jersey.
