Rishabh Pant Likely to Miss ODI Squad as India Prepares for New Zealand Series

The BCCI is yet to reveal India’s ODI squad for the upcoming New Zealand series — but indications suggest that Rishabh Pant may not find a place in the final list. According to developments emerging ahead of the announcement, the wicketkeeper-batter is expected to be omitted from the three-match ODI series starting January 11.

Pant was part of the squad during the South Africa ODIs but did not feature in any of the matches. If the decision holds, this would mark another gap in his limited-overs journey, with his last ODI appearance coming during the 2024 series against Sri Lanka.

Who could replace Pant?

Selectors are reportedly considering Ishan Kishan and Sanju Samson as the frontrunners for the backup wicketkeeper role. Kishan has impressed with strong domestic form and was included in India’s recent T20 World Cup squad. Samson, meanwhile, brings consistency in ODIs and scored a century in his previous outing in 2023.

Leadership shuffle and injury returns

Shubman Gill is poised to return as captain after recovering from a neck injury suffered during the South Africa series. While Gill’s comeback steadies the top order, there remains uncertainty about vice-captain Shreyas Iyer, who is training at the Centre of Excellence but awaits a final fitness clearance.

During Gill and Iyer’s absence, KL Rahul led India to a 2–1 ODI series win over South Africa, providing stability during a transitional phase. With Gill back, the leadership structure is expected to revert to normal.

Pant’s ODI record so far

Pant has featured in 31 ODIs, scoring 871 runs at an average of 33.50, including one century and five fifties. While he has yet to consistently dominate in the shorter formats, he remains highly regarded for his match-winning ability in Test cricket.

Currently captaining Delhi in the Vijay Hazare Trophy 2025–26, Pant’s form has been mixed — posting scores of 5 and 70 in his first two matches. Selectors are watching closely as he looks to re-establish himself in India’s ODI plans.
