Uttar Pradesh Tops India in Digital Waqf Registration

Uttar Pradesh has emerged as the leading state in India for the digital registration of Waqf properties, completing the online listing of a record 92,832 properties on the central government’s ‘Ummeed’ portal. This milestone places the state at the top nationwide in terms of Waqf property digitisation.

Following directions issued by the Ministry of Minority Affairs on June 6, 2025, all states were asked to complete the registration of Waqf assets on the Ummeed portal by December 5, 2025. While the Centre later granted a six-month extension, Uttar Pradesh achieved its target well ahead of schedule.

Out of the total registrations in the state, 86,347 are Sunni Waqf properties and 6,485 are Shia Waqf properties, reflecting a comprehensive and inclusive registration drive. According to data available on the Ummeed portal, Uttar Pradesh accounts for the highest share of digitally registered Waqf properties in the country.

The timely completion of this massive exercise has been credited to focused administrative efforts and extensive awareness campaigns conducted at the district level. These initiatives ensured that a large number of Mutawallis (Waqf property managers) completed the online registration process without delay.

District-wise figures show that Lucknow leads in the registration of Shia Waqf properties with 625 entries, followed by Amroha (539) and Meerut (533). In the Sunni Waqf category, Barabanki secured the top position with 4,940 registered properties, while Sitapur and Azamgarh ranked second and third respectively. Districts such as Bijnor, Moradabad, Saharanpur, Meerut and Jaunpur also recorded strong performance.

This large-scale digital registration drive is expected to bring greater transparency and accountability to Waqf property management, curb misuse, and support the protection and development of Waqf assets across Uttar Pradesh.
