A day after a deadly explosion near Delhi’s historic Red Fort claimed eight lives, Prime Minister Narendra Modi assured that those responsible “will not be spared.”
On Tuesday morning, an uneasy calm prevailed around the usually crowded area where the explosion occurred. Security forces cordoned off the site while forensic and police teams carried out detailed investigations to determine the cause of the blast.
According to Delhi Police Commissioner, the incident took place at around 6:52 PM local time (13:22 GMT) on Monday when a slow-moving vehicle halted at a traffic signal and suddenly exploded.
Though officials have not yet confirmed the exact cause of the explosion, authorities say all angles—including terror links—are being investigated.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah chaired a high-level security review meeting early Tuesday with top intelligence and police officials. “We are exploring every possibility and ensuring that those responsible face the harshest punishment,” Shah stated.
The 17th-century Red Fort, a major tourist attraction and UNESCO World Heritage Site, has been temporarily closed for three days as a precautionary measure while the investigation continues.
Thousands of visitors typically throng the monument and nearby market daily, but on Tuesday, the area remained heavily guarded and eerily silent following the tragic event.
