Former Mizoram Governor and Senior Advocate Swaraj Kaushal Passes Away at 73

Senior advocate and former Mizoram Governor Swaraj Kaushal, a respected figure in India’s legal and political circles, passed away at the age of 73. Kaushal, the husband of the late External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj and father of BJP MP Bansuri Swaraj, breathed his last on December 4.

The news of his demise was confirmed by the Delhi BJP through an announcement on its official X handle. Expressing grief, Delhi BJP MLA Satish Upadhyay wrote that he was deeply saddened by the sudden loss of a distinguished leader who served the nation with “integrity, wisdom, and unmatched dedication.” He offered heartfelt condolences to Bansuri Swaraj and the entire family.

Swaraj Kaushal was widely known as one of India’s most prominent legal minds. A senior advocate of the Supreme Court, he built an illustrious career rooted in intellect, discipline, and public service. He also had a notable political journey—serving as a Rajya Sabha MP for six years and later becoming the Governor of Mizoram. Remarkably, he holds the distinction of being one of the youngest individuals ever appointed as a Governor in India.

Born on 12 July 1952, Kaushal pursued his education at Delhi University and Punjab University, where he began shaping his future in law. His dedication to the profession soon made him a respected name among senior advocates.

His public life expanded when he was appointed Governor of Mizoram, where he played a significant role in the region’s administrative affairs. Beyond his political responsibilities, he continued contributing to the legal field with expertise and commitment.

Swaraj Kaushal married Sushma Swaraj in 1975, forming a partnership admired across India for its mutual respect, support, and dedication to public life. The couple remained a strong presence in the nation’s political landscape for decades.

The Delhi BJP also announced that his last rites would be held on December 4 at 4:30 PM at the Lodhi Road crematorium in New Delhi.

His passing marks the end of a remarkable career in law, governance, and public service, leaving behind a legacy remembered with deep respect.
