Zayed Khan
Actor Zayed Khan has opened up about the criticism his family faced after performing the last rites of his mother, Zarine Khan, according to Hindu traditions. The actor addressed the controversy with clarity and calm, stating that the decision was guided purely by his mother’s final wish and the family’s belief in humanity above all else.
Zarine Khan, who passed away in November last year at the age of 81 due to age-related health complications, was known for her diverse cultural background. Born into a Parsi family and later married into a Muslim household, her life reflected a blend of traditions and beliefs. However, it was the choice of Hindu cremation rituals that caught public attention and led to a wave of mixed reactions on social media.
Responding to the trolling, Zayed emphasized that his family does not view religion through a rigid lens. He explained that, for them, humanity comes first, and faith is a deeply personal matter that does not require public validation. According to him, every individual has the right to practice their beliefs in their own way, without fear of judgment.
Sharing a heartfelt memory, Zayed revealed that his mother had once expressed a simple yet meaningful wish. While sitting by a serene river, she had said that she wanted her ashes to be immersed in flowing water when she passed away, symbolizing freedom and peace. For Zayed, fulfilling that wish became more important than adhering to societal expectations or avoiding criticism.
He further reflected on the nature of public reactions, stating that resistance to change is common in society. However, he also pointed out that such moments can serve as opportunities for growth and transformation. Drawing from a popular philosophical thought, he suggested that challenging times often lead to stronger individuals and, eventually, a better society. He added that he encourages his children to see the present as a chance to shape a more inclusive and understanding future.
The funeral, held in Mumbai, was attended by several well-known figures from the film industry, including Hrithik Roshan, Rajat Bedi, Neil Nitin Mukesh, Esha Deol, Zoya Akhtar, and Bobby Deol, among others, who came together to pay their respects.
Zarine’s daughter, Farah Khan Ali, had also shared an emotional note following her mother’s passing. She described Zarine as a woman who truly embodied unity and compassion. Highlighting her life journey—from being born a Parsi to marrying into a Muslim family and eventually being cremated as per Hindu traditions—Farah noted that her mother’s life was a powerful example of humanity transcending religious boundaries. She added that Zarine believed in forgiveness and love, values that continue to guide the family.
Before stepping away from the film industry after her marriage to Sanjay Khan, Zarine Khan had briefly appeared in films such as Tere Ghar Ke Saamne and Ek Phool Do Mali. She later built a successful career in interior design and also authored a cookbook that celebrated family traditions and recipes.
Through his response, Zayed Khan has not only defended his family’s decision but also highlighted a broader message about acceptance, personal freedom, and the importance of honoring loved ones’ wishes. In a time when public scrutiny is often intense, his words serve as a reminder that compassion and respect should always come first.
