Selena Gomez Says She Was Misdiagnosed Before Bipolar Diagnosis

Singer and actress Selena Gomez has once again spoken candidly about her mental health journey, revealing that she believes she was initially misdiagnosed before eventually understanding that she was living with Bipolar Disorder. Her honest conversation highlights how complicated and emotional the process of finding the right diagnosis can be.

The 33-year-old star opened up during the March 3, 2026 episode of the Friends Keep Secrets podcast, where she appeared alongside her husband, music producer Benny Blanco. During the discussion, Gomez shared that she had sensed something was wrong long before doctors confirmed her condition.

“I knew something was wrong, but I think I was misdiagnosed,” Gomez explained. She described how she met several therapists over the years while trying to understand her mental health. According to her, the process was confusing and emotionally exhausting. “People were just assuming, and I would try multiple therapists,” she said, adding that navigating therapy and mental health discussions can be extremely complicated.

Despite the struggles, Gomez stressed the importance of persistence. She encouraged people not to give up while searching for the right support and treatment.

Multiple rehab stays during her journey

Gomez also revealed that she entered four different rehabilitation programs while trying to find clarity about her mental health. Blanco spoke about how the condition sometimes affects her, especially during manic episodes.

According to Blanco, Gomez occasionally recognizes the signs after an episode has already begun, and at times she doesn’t remember everything that happened during those moments. He described the situation as delicate, explaining that it can be difficult to discuss the condition while someone is experiencing a manic phase.

However, Gomez has become more self-aware over time. Blanco said she sometimes notices the early signs and openly acknowledges when she feels a manic phase approaching.

Earlier revelations about her mental health

This is not the first time Gomez has spoken publicly about her struggles. In her 2022 documentary My Mind & Me, she shared details about a serious psychotic episode in 2018 that eventually led to doctors diagnosing her with bipolar disorder after several hospital stays.

In an earlier interview with Rolling Stone magazine, Gomez also reflected on how her early twenties were a particularly dark period in her life. She explained that she often felt out of control emotionally, experiencing extreme highs and lows that she could not fully understand at the time.

Turning struggles into purpose

Today, Gomez says receiving the correct diagnosis has helped her better understand her past reactions and emotional experiences. She believes therapy and proper mental health support have been essential in helping her move forward.

The singer also criticized the stigma surrounding therapy, noting that many people still feel ashamed about seeking professional help. For her, however, understanding her condition brought clarity about why she sometimes reacted differently than others.

Gomez now uses her platform to promote mental health awareness. Through her successful series Only Murders in the Building and her philanthropic initiative Rare Impact Fund, she continues to advocate for mental health support and resources.

With the support of Benny Blanco and her growing self-awareness, Gomez says she is now in a healthier place and hopes that sharing her story will encourage others to seek help without fear or shame.
