Pakistan Court Extends Interim Bail for Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi

A local court in Pakistan has extended the interim bail of PTI founder and former Prime Minister Imran Khan, along with his wife Bushra Bibi, in several pending cases — including those connected to the May 9 unrest. The court directed that Khan must attend the next hearing, either physically or through video conferencing.

The directive came from Additional District and Sessions Judge Muhammad Afzal Majoka. During the proceedings, Advocate Shamsa Kayani appeared on behalf of both Khan and Bushra Bibi. However, arguments could not be presented because Imran Khan was not produced before the court.

Multiple Cases Under Review

Imran Khan is currently facing a series of legal matters, ranging from the May 9 violence to attempted murder allegations and accusations related to fake receipts. Meanwhile, Bushra Bibi is also named in a separate Toshakhana case.

In another proceeding, Additional District and Sessions Judge Chaudhry Amir Zia extended Bushra Bibi’s interim pre-arrest bail. Her case, registered at Ramna police station, is tied to provisions under the Peaceful Assembly and Public Order Act, along with other legal sections.

Concerns Over Legal Access

PTI representatives claimed that their legal team was prevented from meeting Khan at Adiala Jail to obtain signatures needed for filing appeals in the Toshakhana case. Lawyer Khalid Yousaf Chaudhry reportedly could not secure the necessary authorization documents.

The party criticized the restrictions, calling them deliberate hurdles placed in the way of its founder’s right to appeal. PTI alleged that meetings with lawyers were being obstructed, the legal desk was shut down, and essential facilitation was being denied.

Party Calls for Immediate Access

According to PTI, Punjab Prison Rules, 1978, grant inmates the right to consult counsel, sign legal records, and file appeals. The party further argued that blocking access runs contrary to constitutional guarantees, including Articles 10-A, 4, 9, and 25.

PTI demanded that authorities allow Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi unrestricted access to legal assistance so they can pursue lawful remedies.

The matter has been adjourned until January 27, with the court instructing that both individuals’ presence be ensured on the next hearing date.
