Tensions rose outside Pakistan’s Adiala Jail on Wednesday after rumours circulated claiming that former Prime Minister Imran Khan had died in custody. Prison authorities swiftly dismissed the claims, confirming that the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder is “healthy and safe” inside the facility.
According to Geo News, jail officials labelled the speculation as entirely “baseless,” emphasising that Imran Khan is receiving proper medical attention and has not been moved from the prison under any circumstances.
“There is no truth to reports of his transfer. He is perfectly stable,” officials reiterated.
Imran Khan has been imprisoned for more than two years in connection with several corruption and terrorism-related cases. His family, however, alleges that he has been held in solitary confinement and subjected to harsh conditions. His sisters and sons claim that despite clear court orders allowing two visits per week, they have repeatedly been denied access. The Islamabad High Court had mandated the visitation schedule.
On Wednesday, PTI supporters and Imran Khan’s sisters — Noreen Khan (Niazi), Aleema Khan, and Uzma Khan — gathered near the Adiala Jail check-post for a sit-in protest. The demonstration drew a large crowd, with some individuals reportedly attempting to breach the jail’s outer area. The protest concluded only after police and prison officials assured Aleema Khan that a meeting would be arranged.
As per ARY News, the sisters are expected to meet Imran Khan later today and again in the coming week.
Meanwhile, Defence Minister Khawaja Asif maintained that Imran Khan is currently being given better care and facilities compared to his earlier periods of detention.
