Hyderabad Interfaith Marriage: An interfaith couple in Hyderabad formalised their marriage for the second time at a local police station after facing opposition from the bride’s family, particularly her mother, officials said. The unusual ceremony brought an end to weeks of tension and uncertainty, ultimately resulting in reconciliation within the family.
The couple, identified as Imran (26) and Bhavya Sri (24), have been in a relationship for the past four years. According to police, they had already married around four months ago following Christian customs. Bhavya’s family had embraced Christianity a few years earlier after the death of her father, which played a role in their initial wedding ceremony.
However, the marriage soon became a point of contention within the family. Bhavya’s mother reportedly objected to the interfaith alliance, leading the couple to seek assistance from the police to ensure their safety and to resolve the dispute. Concerned about possible pressure and interference, the couple approached law enforcement authorities to mediate the situation.
During discussions at the police station, the bride’s mother expressed her condition for accepting the marriage. She reportedly insisted that her daughter be married according to Hindu traditions. In an effort to avoid further conflict and to gain family acceptance, Imran agreed to the request, police officials said.
Four days ago, the couple again visited the police station along with a few relatives. As they were leaving the premises, Imran tied a mangalsutra around Bhavya’s neck, symbolising marriage according to Hindu customs. Police clarified that no officers were present at the exact moment when the ritual was performed, though the event took place in the vicinity of the station following earlier interactions with officials.
Officials also noted that Imran’s family did not oppose the marriage. His family includes his mother and a widowed sister, both of whom supported his decision. The absence of resistance from the groom’s side helped ease the situation and contributed to a smoother resolution.
Professionally, both Imran and Bhavya are well-settled. Imran is employed with a bank, while Bhavya works in the software industry. Police said both have stable jobs and good salaries, factors that may have further reassured family members regarding the couple’s future.
Following the second ceremony, the bride’s mother reportedly accepted the marriage and reconciled with the couple. Police confirmed that the immediate tensions within the family have subsided and no further complaints have been received.
Authorities also revealed that while members of a right-wing outfit had initially expressed opposition to the interfaith marriage, they did not appear later and no protests or disruptions were reported. The situation remained peaceful throughout, and no law-and-order issues were recorded.
The incident once again highlights the social challenges faced by interfaith couples in India, as well as the role played by police in mediating family disputes and ensuring the safety of consenting adults.
